Jonathan’s teacher referred him to ARK as soon as he entered her 1st grade classroom. A non-reader who had repeated Kindergarten, Jonathan had not learned to “break the code” over the summer even though his only known obstacle, amblyopia (a visual issue), had been corrected the year before. During seven months of twice-weekly sessions with an ARK Educational Therapist following a screening of reading skills, Jonathan mastered the basic rules of reading, then, through hard work, learned he could pursue his most beloved interests through books. Within the year, he was reading 3rd-grade level print and had begun buying his own books.
Today, Jonathan is a strong reader who barely recalls the days when books intimidated him. He now typically comes to ARK during the summer to brush up on other skills. Most recently, Jonathan’s instruction has focused on supporting his excellent compositional skills through work on the conventions of written grammar.
